The one and only Ayurveda institute of southern Odisha
Kaviraj Ananta Tripathy Sharma Ayurvedic College & Hospital, Ankushpur is the one and only Ayurveda institute of southern Odisha. It is one of the Govt. Ayurvedic Colleges of the state, founded on 15th August 1978 under private management with the active support of Late Kaviraj Ananta Tripathy Sharma, Ex-Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha).
Although initially the college was functioning at Chaturbhuja Dharmasala, Berhampur, in 1980 it was shifted to its own building at Ankushpur. It is situated on the Aska road (NH 217) about 10 km from Berhampur railway station and 24 km away from Gopalpur-on-Sea, spread over about 10 acres of land.
During its establishment the college was named Berhampur Ayurvedic College. After the demise of the founder Kaviraj Ananta Tripathy Sharma in the year 1991, it was renamed as Kaviraj Ananta Tripathy Sharma Ayurvedic College & Hospital, Ankushpur. On 1st April 1994 the institution was taken over by the Govt. of Odisha, Dept. of Health and Family Welfare, and simultaneously amalgamated with the Govt. Ayurvedic Hospital, Berhampur, which was functioning inside the campus. It is now called KATS Ayurvedic College and Hospital, Ankushpur.
Academics & Faculty
The college has made provision for teaching and practical training for U.G. students. Every year, 75 students are selected and admitted by the State Selection Committee constituted by the Govt. of Odisha. The college is run by well-committed and dedicated teachers along with 15 paramedical personnel. Fourteen departments are currently running in the college with 36 teaching faculty members and forty non-teaching staff. The college has a strength of approximately 345 students.
Infrastructure
The college has a good and well-equipped library containing books, journals and periodicals. A well-maintained Herbal Garden is present in the campus, spreading over about five acres of land and containing valuable species of plants for practical demonstration to students. The college has a medicine manufacturing unit (Pharmacy) attached to the Dept. of Rasashastra, meant for practical training of the students and for supplying medicines to OPD and IPD patients.
Hospital & Community Service
The hospital situated in the campus consists of an outdoor and an indoor block. Apart from general treatment, the specialised Panchakarma Chikitsa has attracted patients from far distant places across the state, for which the hospital has gained a good name. A good number of surgical patients, especially with ano-rectal diseases, have been treated and cured by application of Ksharasutra therapy.
Apart from teaching and training the students, the institution renders health services and organises symposiums, seminars, quiz competitions, national level programmes like ROTP, IEC, CME and workshops on different subjects as a part of its academic activities.
